Drawings

Even before SimCity was invented, I was drawing my own cities and regions on paper. To this day I still tend to doodle street grids and county lines when I'm bored. However, thanks to computer graphics software, I have been able to draw far more advanced "fake maps" digitally.

Here are a few of my creations.

NOTE: For most maps, the roads are colored similar to the Rand McNally Road Atlases published in the U.S., e.g., blue freeways, green tollways, etc.

Parsico (2003) Added 11 December 2003
A large metropolitan area. Work in progress.

Libertaria (2003) - large (1200x1600, 700 KB) - small (600x800, 261 KB)
Added 25 May 2003
A coastal country with seven counties, with places named after various liberty-related ideas, people, places, and fictional characters. I began this project in late 2002 and finished it in the spring of 2003.

San Nicolas (2003) Added 1 June 2003
An inland city of about 600,000 on a river with small lakes nearby. The vague resemblance of the freeway network to San Antonio inspired the city's name. This is the first computer-drawn map I have done with named roads and streets. I started this project 2 March 2003 and finished 1 June 2003.

Womenyu (2001) Added 14 September 2001
A small country with Asianesque place names, along with a very different, Slavic-looking foreign country surrounding it on three sides. The map was drawn entirely prior to the attacks on America. Names generated using the
LangMaker word-generating program.

Alphabetica (2003) Added 11 March 2003
This is a state with 26 counties, one for each letter of the alphabet. Each county has five towns each beginning with the same letter as the county. Click for more details.

Abacab/Dukeville (2003) Added 4 September 2003
A modest metropolitan area (roughly 500,000 people) named after some of my favorite music, especially the works and members of Genesis, whose albums Abacab (1981) and Duke (1980) are my two favorite albums by any artist.

Gridville (2003) Added 9 September 2003
Grids to the extreme! Even the rivers are on a grid!

Harbor City (2000)
A metro area map inspired by my visits to Baltimore, Maryland. Drawn in late summer/early fall 2000.

Patagro (2001) added 30 June 2001
A vaguely Slavic-looking group of counties named using LangMaker.

Bicycle Peninsula (2003) Added 9 September 2003
A coastal peninsula dotted with small villages connected by bicycle paths and a few motorways.

Hexapolis (2003) Added 9 September 2003
A metro area with six core cities and several dozen suburbs.

Slestur/Zeugiod (2003) Added 25 May 2003
Slestur and Zeugiod are two coastal countries with very different languages. Drawn March 2003. Names generated by LangMaker.

Bebullen (2002) Added 25 May 2003
Bebullen is an inland town of 50,000 near a reservoir. This is a map of Bebullen and surrounding towns, all named using LangMaker. Drawn in the summer of 2002.

Scanned Maps (Drawn on Paper)

The Taffyville Collection
This is a series of maps I drew in 1995 and 1996 while I was in college. Taffyville was named for our family cat, Taffy. I drew the maps with colored pencil on graph paper, and these are scans of those drawings.
